Port Velocity — Why Your Box Chuffs at SPL

You built the box, the subs work, the tuning hits the right frequency on the RTA — but at full SPL you hear an annoying "whoosh" overlaying every bass note. That's port chuff: turbulent airflow at the port openings. It's fixable, but you have to understand what causes it before you can size around it.
Why air gets loud
At resonance, the port is moving an enormous mass of air back and forth — many cubic feet per second on a high-output build. The cross-sectional area of the port determines how fast that air has to move. Smaller port = faster air = higher velocity. Beyond a critical speed, the airflow stops being smooth (laminar) and breaks into turbulence (vortex shedding at the port mouth). You hear it as whooshing or rushing — chuff.
The thresholds we use
- • < 17 m/s — quiet enough for SQ-grade builds at all listening levels
- • 17–25 m/s — caution territory, may chuff at peak content but not on normal-volume listening
- • 25–35 m/s — audible turbulence; port noise overlays bass output
- • > 35 m/s — significant compression and distortion; sub starts unloading
What the air velocity calculator estimates
The Port/Vent Length calculator uses a tier-1 estimate based on driver Sd (cone area), Xmax (peak excursion), the box tuning, and your port area. With minimal inputs it assumes a 12" driver with a 15 mm Xmax; if you provide your driver's actual Sd and Xmax, the estimate gets more accurate. With full Thiele-Small parameters and power input, the tier-3 model accounts for the actual cone displacement at the velocity peak.
The fixes
- • Bigger ports — either widen the slot or add a second aero tube. Doubling port area cuts velocity in half.
- • Flared aero ports — both ends flared by 1.2–1.4× the throat diameter cut chuff dramatically with little tuning shift
- • Lower tuning — chuff is worst at Fb. Tuning lower spreads excursion across more bandwidth.
- • Accept lower tuning at the same length — shorter ports raise tuning slightly but reduce mass-of-air requirement
A practical example
A 3 ft³ box tuned to 33 Hz with a single 4-inch round aero port has a port area of ~12.5 in². For one 12" sub with 15 mm Xmax pushed to its limit, the tier-1 velocity estimate is around 32 m/s — well into chuff territory. Two 4-inch ports drop that to ~16 m/s — under the SQ-quiet threshold. The box volume stays the same; only the port count changes.
Port chuff is one of the few audio problems that's easy to fix in CAD before you cut wood. The Port/Vent calculator warns you when velocity is heading into bad territory.
